I am not a tech guru; I’m just a fan of technology. Sometimes, I write blogs about it. I also enjoy living a minimalist lifestyle. Here is a list of the software I use in my day-to-day life.
For my operating system I use Pop!_OS. When it comes to operating systems, you can't really go wrong with Linux. I know other Linux fans are laughing at me. Why do I use Pop!_OS? Why not Arch Linux? Yes, you can fully customize Arch Linux and other distributions like Gentoo, Void Linux, etc. But I don’t have time for ricing Linux distros; I have other work to do. I don’t have a girlfriend because I spend my time ricing and customizing Linux. People call me anti-social—ha ha!
I use LibreWolf as my primary browser. It's a fork of Firefox without all the useless features, with an emphasis on privacy and security. The two essential extensions I use is uBlock Origin and Vimium
I use Kitty for my terminal. There's probably a better one out there, and maybe one day I'll try something else, but I love how tabs are integrated. Kitty's split window mechanism is like a competitor to tmux. I personally don't use tmux, though I've configured it on my machine. Kitty provides me with the features I want from tmux. And its other shortcuts are awesome.
For my shell, I use zsh. It is user-friendly and has things like command suggestions and advanced command completion. I absolutely love it!
For video and audio I use mpv - a media player with a minimal GUI. It plays just about everything I throw at it. Almost everyone is using it nowadays and it’s very versatile. There isn’t much more I can say about mpv other than it’s my favorite video and audio player.
For image viewing I use sxiv. A simple image viewer. Because it’s very simple and follows closely with the Suckless philosophy.
For document viewing I use zathura. Lightweight PDF viewer (with the MuPDF plugin), it has vim-like key-bindings. Ummah... I love it!
For making small or simple changes to images I use ImageMagick. For creating images or making larger edits I use GIMP.
vim - my text editor of choice. In fact, this website's content, HTML, and CSS is managed/written in vim. When I edit text with Vim, it feels like I'm at home. It's like my girlfriend. I think that programming in Vimscript can be an absolute nightmare sometimes.
For video download I use yt-dlp. Very useful when connected to newsboat, or when I want to rip a video to save locally.
For this I use htop. It's easy for me to check my computer's processes. But I am too lazy to check my own daily task process—ha ha!
I manage all my passwords with the pass password manager. I like how it manages passwords with GPG.
When I want to use internet from my terminal (because I'm too lazy to open the graphical browser), I use w3m. It's very handy when I don't want the bloated CSS and JavaScript. It helps me surf the internet without the bloat. And the combination of w3m, yt-dlp, and mpv makes it feel like a 'hero' to me, just like Hero Alam (the Bangladeshi actor) 😁
For writing stories, I use LibreOffice. I hate Microsoft's products, and you already know that.
For this I use newsboat. a fast RSS reader. In addition to handling a standard RSS/Atom feeds, I've configured it to either download or open YouTube videos in mpv.
For Email, I use Geary. It's simple to use..
That's all man... I will remember and list the rest of the things that I use on a daily basis. Feel free to read my technology blogs, even though I am not a guru who will enlighten you.
