Citizen
I sometimes think and ask myself, am I a citizen of Bangladesh? What kind of citizen am I? What is the meaning of 'citizen'? Is it just being a full legal member of a country? Is it those who have the right to vote, the protection of the government, and the duty to obey the country's laws?
This thought perplexes me and leads me into deep introspection. I believe in cosmopolitanism. I like to think of myself not only as a citizen of Bangladesh but also as a citizen of the world. All individual human beings are the ultimate units of moral concern. We are all citizens of the world, and our most important moral duty is to every other human being on the planet, not just to the people in our own country.
Anyway, happy Victory Day, Bangladesh 🇧🇩. On this day in 1971, the Bangladeshi people fought for the most important human right, independence. Independence is our birthright. No one has the right to confiscate one's freedom. Freedom comes with costs, no matter what they are, even lives. To those who dedicated their lives for our independence, you have my unremitting regard.
